Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan arrived in St. Petersburg on August 9. His visit followed the rapid deterioration of the bilateral ties after the downing of the Russian plane by Turkish military forces. However, the real causes are deeply rooted in a larger-scale conflict over a range of global and regional issues.
